creating a sensory ecology of publishing
VIBRISSAE are the facial papillary on most mammals, birds, and certain insects. They operate as sensory organs crucial in sensing and perceiving movement through space. Whiskers, as they are commonly referred to, are essential for navigation, detection, and overall safety of the creature to which they are connected. VIBRISSAE ensure survival in any given environment. These organs are so subtle they can detect the slightest vibration. The word “vibrissae” comes from the Latin word “vibrio” which means “to vibrate.”
The artist’s work in the world operate as VIBRISSAE. That tentative venture forward sensing, perceiving, foundational to that next step forward in language-based thinking and voicing.
VIBRISSAE started as a quarterly web zine to start bringing together practices, rituals, spells, and other wisdoms of individuals with various magical, animistic, divinatory, and shamanic practices into conversation. Just as the call for the Summer Solstice 2020 issue was to come out, completing a full cycle of this project, the COVID-19 virus plagued planet Earth, essentially grounding any kind of lift off.
Until Now.
VIBRISSAE Editions will print original works by yours truly, while expanding over time to produce the work of the incredible community of artists, visionaries, activists, and heart healers I meet everyday. I’m excited to collaborate with poets and writers working in print media as well as visual, auditory, and extra-sensory practices in the forms of broadsides, chapbooks, film, and other literary artifacts.
